We started the 40-Day Marriage Challenge on January 3, 2010. We have over 500 couples participating. We will finish on Friday, February 12th with a renewal time for all couples and a HUGE party on our campus.

We have started an organization called Marriage Inc. in our community. Some of the initiatives include sponsoring an annual \"date night\" for our community. Last year nearly 1600 people joined us. This year\'s event is on Friday, Jan. 29. We are expecting at least 1600 if not more. Marriage Inc. is also training marriage mentors to provide pre-marital preparation for engaged and seriously dating couples. They also do mentoring for married couples who are struggling. We have gotten together the pastors of the county ( over 40 so far) to agree on a community marriage initiative and plan to have a public signing of the document on Sunday, Feb. 14 on the steps of the courthouse. Pray for us as the momentum seems to really be taking off.
My husband, Glenn and I are co-facilitating a marriage class at our church each Sunday. We started last Sunday, Jan. 24 and will continue for a total of 12 weeks. It is based on the book,\"Love and Respect\" by Dr. Emerson Eggrich. This is our third year since our Pastor Cal approached us to teach a class on Marriage. We have witnessed God\'s healing power in marriages as the couples persevere in their relationships with God and each other. It is an honor and privelege to serve the Lord this way. We are working with a local radio station and having a contest. Northwest Arkansas Healthy Marriages is doing several things for National Marriage Week USA. We have a sold out Valentine Ultimate Date Night event with a nationally renowned comedian couple. We have sponsored 2 days on our local radio station to promote marriage week. We invited 9 area mayors to proclaim February 7-17 as National Marriage Week. We highlighted the National Marriage Week USA banner on our home page and on John Brown University’s home page. We created a list of specific ways that individuals, couples, churches and businesses can participate in marriage week. We have launched our social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to promote marriage week. We have sent out a press release to our local media. We sent out emails to our entire list (pastors, churches, business, and individuals) encouraging how they can participate in marriage week. We featured National Marriage Week USA in our monthly eNewsletter.

Every year we host a Holy Mass and Dinner for couples. We encourage renewal of vows each year and then compliment the couples with a sit down dinner with catered food and a dj for dancing. This gives couples a reason to be proud to be married and also blesses their sacrament with praise and worship.

We have trained more than 70 Marriage Mentors couples, who come alongside premarital and married couples using the Prepare/Enrich Inventories. They mentor over a six week period to encourage couples for their strengths and to make them aware of growth areas and help to move the growth areas toward health. The life-on-life mentoring experience is a powerful one!

For years now my wife and I have been meeting with young people to prepare them for courtship/dating in the teen years. We have also had an on-going pre-marital counseling class for everyone that is planning on getting married. The average person spend up to 500 hours preparing for the wedding day and less than 5 hours preparing for the marriage so I have put together a 10 to 12 weeks approximately 30 hours of time with my wife and i along with work that has to be accomplished as we work through the Scriptures teaching on marriage and divorce (spending a long time in the first 3 chapters of Genesis) as well as using the book The Most Influential Year in a Man\\\'s/Woman\\\'s Life by Mark and Susan Devries and Robert and Bobbie Wolgemuth. This book and our session together have proved more profitable than sending people home with DVD\\\'s or books to read on their own because there is a built in accountability system as well as an objective observer (my wife and I) who can see other things they may need to be worked on...and all of our couples have talked about how personal it is for the pastor to be so involved...gives them a more positive outlook of the church. I have done a considerable amount of marriage counseling through the years as well...each couple is different but since so many believer and non-believer have no clue as to the what and why of marriage from God\\\'s perspective we spend a lot of time here instead of in books on marriage. Giving these folks a good foundation in the Scriptures give great aid to any \\\"good\\\" book on marriage and divorce. Even the non-believers find it interesting to have a history of marriage and an answer to the questions about why it was originally established and now a days why it is so important for marriage to be defined as between one man and one woman forever. I have printed materials as well as file in Word that I would be glad to share. By God\\\'s grace they have been proven effective as I am able to keep up with most of the folks that I have married and know that by God\\\'s grace 95% of these folks are still married and I have been in ministry now 19 years and began marrying people the first year of ministry. Thank you for this awareness you are bringing to the church. I also work with men\\\'s ministries to bring them back to the word and their job of bring God glory as a husband, father, churchman...giving them a biblical foundation as to their calling enhances the longevity of marrriage as well.
